Avalanche snowboards has been right there as part of the snowboarding culture since the early 1980s, well before most of the general population had even heard of snowboarding. Established in 1982 in North Lake Tahoe, California by Chris Sanders, his wife Bev Sanders, and Earl Zeller. Avalanche was one of the most recognizable snowboard companies of the day, mostly on the back break through designs and a tsunami of media coverage generated by Chris’s brother Damian Sanders. The Sanders legacy and rich history of Avalanche snowboards has been recognized by the industry as one of the original snowboard brands!

Avalanche was the first company to offer a metal edge on their snowboard. The metal edge snowboard designed by Chris Sanders revolutionized snowboarding and manufacturing forever. The entire industry soon followed with his ice slaying metal edge designed snowboard.

Chris' wife Bev Sanders impact on designing women's specific snowboards has made history in design as well. Bev was the first to develop women's specific flex patterns, core stiffness, and a comprehensive design that catered to the women's physique. Her designs won Transworld and Snowboard Magazine's award for best free-riding board and initiated higher standards for female- specific snowboard equipment. With all the development from the pro riders on their Avalanche Pro models, and Bev Sanders work on her women's specific line of snowboards, from the directional Avalanche Kick Model with the neon pink base graphics, to Damian Sanders mid 90’s Ice Rocket model, and the women's specific Xelle series.

Avalanche continued to manufacture its pro level snowboards, and women's specific designs, but the market was changing, and the need for a price oriented yet still a wood core snowboard was the focus. Avalanche introduced a solid riding yet inexpensive cap construction at aggressive prices to help Avalanche's position in the World market.

Avalanche had an amazing team of pro athletes from the start. Tom Burt single handedly pioneered the industry to explore untracked terrain and head to the tallest and steepest mountains. His passion and willingness to destroy any mountain in front of him, coined him as the most extreme snowboarder in the 90’s. Tom has ridden more vertical feet than any other rider in history and his impact on the sport of snowboarding and Avalanche snowboards is incomparable. Tom Burt was the original team rider and his freeride and extreme mountain design snowboards were the best in the world. These designs utilized a graphite base, lightweight top sheets and high-tech wood cores for Toms line of extreme snowboards.

Damian Sanders was another of the original Avalanche high profile professional snowboarders to come out of the boom period in snowboarding in the late 1980's and early 1990's. Bright neon outerwear, Vuarnet sunglasses, pink hardboots and spiked blonde hair was the typical Southern California lifestyle for Damian but where he really shined was on his board, dropping huge cliffs, usually inverted with mad style! The cameras were always pointed at Damian as they were guaranteed to capture something amazing. His go fast at all time attitude regardless if on a snowboard, motorcycle or a sportscar rewarded him in magazines, podiums, videos and a celebrity lifestyle!

With so much attention around Damian Sanders and Tom Burt. Avalanche became the prominent brand in California, then worldwide with all the media and team attention that followed them.

With the consolidation of the snowboard industry, Avalanche was purchased by Silence Snowboards in the late 1990's where Silence utilized some of their technology and helped co-develop new tech for both Avalanche and Silence Snowboards.

Today Avalanche continues to be a leader in the snowboard industry and produces all levels of quality snowboard designs for all styles of riding. 

The original impact that Chris, Bev, not to mention the impact of superstar riders like Tom and Damian have given Avalanche one of the most widely recognized names in the sport. With the rich history of the brand, and the focus on design superiority, Avalanche continues today as one of the most prominent brands in snowboarding history.
